From: http://www.kostanskifuneralhome.com/obits Greenfield, MA-Clayton "Buster" D. Davenport, Jr., 72, of 228 South Shelburne Rd. died Saturday (9/12) at Baystate Franklin Medical Center. He was born on October 22, 1936 in Greenfield the son of Clayton D. and Alice M. (Steiner) Davenport, Sr. He attended local school in Greenfield and was a graduate of Greenfield High School, Class of 1954. He joined the Armor/Tank division during the Korean War and spent two years serving his country. He went to work for his dad after the service for several years and left to work as a Crane Operator for W.W. Wyman until 1968. Upon his father's death in 1968, Buster took over Clayton Davenport Trucking which was established by Clayton Davenport, Sr. back in 1929. At that time the business was a two truck operation delivering materials throughout the Pioneer Valley. Since then Buster has been instrumental in building a successful construction business which now includes crane service along with a fuel & petroleum hauling company, C.D. Davenport Incorporated. The construction and excavation company now specializes in state bridge repairs and replacements along with other projects in Western Massachusetts. As the years progressed five of his children (Brenda, Chris, Clayton, Jacob & Anthony) joined the company. Buster's guiding principle in the business world was that the customer deserves the most courteous attention he could give them. For all of his life Buster was a cowboy at heart. He loved Morgan Horses and that began with his childhood horse named "Rusty". For years he enjoyed watching his daughters show competitively on the Morgan circuit and now his granddaughters are carrying on his passion. Buster spent countless hours with his sons traveling to dirt bike races and helping them out in the pits. When the winter season came, Buster spent the weekends with his family snowmobiling locally or in Island Pond, VT. Buster loved music, especially the greats like Johnny Cash. Buster was an extremely generous man, continuously and selflessly lending a hand to his family, community or anyone else in need. After spending time at UMass Medical Center and watching the Life Flight helicopter raise people in and out of the hospital, he decided to put in a helipad so any local patient in Greenfield could be quickly air lifted. Coincidentally, Buster was a patient in need when he was airlifted to Boston. For years he has pulled the bolt for the ox pull and horse pull at the Franklin County Fair. His acts of philanthropy also include assisting with the installation of lights at the Greenfield High School Veteran's Memorial Field, towing a caboose to the new Energy Park, setting up the new flag pole on Poet's Seat Tower and providing crane service to support the Relay for Life's eternal flame. He will always be remembered for his love of antique trucks and traveling to the shows throughout New England with his sons, friends and employees. Buster loved the late night snow storms because he was able to call in all of his men and manage the snow plowing operations. He was an avid fan of Red Sox & Patriots. Buster will be sadly missed by his three most loyal canine companions, Molly, O.J. and Toby. His favorite horse "Ben" pre-deceased him in 1999, while his other beloved horse "Billy" is currently cared for by his granddaughters. Buster was unlike anyone you have ever met. He always expected you to do your best and then some. Taking care of his family and business were his two true passions. He was of the generation that truly believed in the sanctity of marriage-after almost 52 years, contract fulfilled. His generous heart will be truly missed by all. We will truly miss you Dad. Among his survivors he leaves his wife of 52 years, the former Helene S. Pinksee, seven children and 13 grandchildren. Brenda L. Ament and her husband James of Greenfield and their two sons Kyle and Christopher, Sharon M. Davenport of Montague and her children, Elena D. Hayes, Anna D. Hayes and Aidan D. Hayes, Christopher E. Davenport and his wife Melissa of Shelburne and their daughter Lauren Jean, Mary L. Davenport and her husband David S. Kasper of Greenfield and their daughters, Helene, Lydia, Grace and Valerie, Clayton D. Davenport, III and his wife Jennifer of Greenfield and their daughters, Lindsay and Caitlyn, Jacob D. Davenport and his significant other Joanne Baker of Greenfield and their son Cody, and Anthony J. Davenport of Greenfield. He also leaves three sisters, Judith Pomeroy of Sunapee, NH, Jean Duprey of Greenfield, and Alice Severence of Northfield and several nieces & nephews. Funeral services will be held on Monday (9/21) at 11am at Robbins Memorial Church with the Rev. Deborah Cory officiating. Burial will be in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday (9/20) from 1pm-4pm at Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St., Greenfield, MA In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Franklin County 4-H Club or to the Antique Truck Club of Western MA, c/o Fred O.
