Individuals : Doris T. CATTO
From: Times Argus, May 7, 2015
BARRE - Doris T. Grant, longtime resident of Perrin Street, passed away peacefully, early on Saturday, May 2, 2015. She was in her home, surrounded by love.
Born in Barre on Feb. 17, 1921, she was the eldest child of Charles and Nellie Catto. Hers was a rich, storied Italian heritage lived during Barre’s early days, and she clearly remembered and loved to tell those stories. Especially entertaining were those of her grandfather Angelo Scampini, who built the now Northfield Savings Bank building downtown.
She attended Barre schools and graduated from Spaulding High School, class of 1938. She then attended Barre City Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1942. She truly loved working at the old Barre City Hospital, Central Vermont Medical Center and especially her many years of private duty nursing. Many in Barre remember her gentle and competent care.
On Oct. 14, 1942, she married Albert Grant at the First Presbyterian Church in Barre. They were the most devoted of couples. He died on Feb. 1, 1993.
Doris was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church and had served on the board of trustees, board of deacons and was a Sunday school teacher for many years.
Doris was the family linchpin, and she and Albert were always the first in the door to help others. We called their car “the rescue wagon.” They held a number of family reunions that brought the generations of our family together. With them, love and family came first.
It did indeed take a village to keep Doris in her home these last years. Those people know who they are. They showed up every day fresh, smiling and full of stories to make her days richer. We will always be grateful to them.
Dr. Robinson and Charlene - there are no words. Your visit last week left her buoyant. The Rev. Carl, we will hear you singing and reading prayers at her bedside in our hearts forever.
And lastly, thanks to the Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice staff. Mary Crossman, her nurse, you astounded us with your competence, willingness, compassion and smile. You were truly a gift to all of us, and we thank you. Ginny Fry and Brenda, Mom really felt the love that came from your hearts and gentle care. And thank you to Martha, who “lined up the creases”; we send a big hug. You each do saintly work with such grace.
Doris leaves behind two daughters, Polly Taylor and her husband, Allan, and Carol Minoli and her husband, Dennis. Her grandchildren are Grant Taylor, of Caledonia, New York, Sarah Crosier and husband Jamie, of North Bennington, Vermont, and Kevin Minoli, of Washington, D.C. Her two great-grandsons, Mason and Sawyer Crosier, have brought her the greatest joy these past years. Nothing made her happier than to watch them build their Legos at her bedside.
Also surviving are special cousins Vincent Catto and Charles Scampini. Her nieces are Julie Liese, Polly Liese, Anne Schell, Joanne Murray, and her nephew is Phillip Fernandez. She is predeceased by granddaughter Carol Kay Taylor, sisters Pauline Fernandez and Julie Liese and brother Charles Catto.
In keeping with her love of nursing, if you wish, you may donate to the People’s Health and Wellness Clinic, 553 N. Main St., Barre, VT 05641.
A graveside service will be held on May 22, 2015, at 11 a.m. at the Hope Cemetery in Barre. A celebration of her life will follow.
Arrangements are in the care of the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home, 58 Summer St., Barre.
