Published in Brattleboro Reformer from Jan. 31, 2007
WILMINGTON -- Bernice Irene Henderson King, 87, died on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007, at the Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bennington, following a stroke.
Mrs. King was born in Charlemont, Mass., on April 18, 1919, the first child of Walter and Lenabel (Rice) Henderson. She graduated from Charlemont High School and from Bliss Business College.
She married “the handsomest man she ever saw,” Robert S. King, on Sept. 27, 1941. They shared a deep love for 50 years until his death on Oct. 1, 1991.
For many years, they had lived in Jeffersonville, raising two girls and a boy there. Mrs. King was very involved in the Congregational Church, where she was superintendent of the Sunday School.
She had worked at Pete Chouinard's insurance office and was an assistant postmistress.
A big part of the Kings' lives in Jeffersonville was the formation and development of the Cambridge Volunteer Fire Department. Mrs. King sacrificed much in support of her husband's tireless efforts to build the department.
In their later years, they were rewarded not only by the success of the local department, but also by the close friendships they had with firefighter families from all over New England. She was truly, the wind beneath his wings.
In 1974, they retired and moved to Wayland, Mass. Mrs. King lived independently there for 15 years after the death of her husband. She had moved back to Vermont to be nearer her family just weeks before her death.
Mrs. King is survived by a daughter, Gayle Henderson King of Portland, Maine; a daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Bob Covey Sr. of Wilmington; a nephew whom she helped raise and loved like a son, Thomas A. Henderson of Eden; and a brother, Richard T. Henderson of Rutland.
She also leaves her grandchildren, Liesl Kloosterman and Pierre Didier of France; Dyan and Jim Albano of Portland; Katherine and James Tweedie of Wells, Maine; Joanne and Mike Crosier, Bobby Maynard Jr. and his fiancé Jill Mattison and Scott Maynard, all of Wilmington; her step-grandchildren Bob and Kathie Covey of Underhill, and Richard and Monique Covey of Wilmington, seven great grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and admirers from all over Vermont and Massachusetts.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Kenneth W. Henderson, and son-in-law Robert A. Maynard Sr.
An informal celebration of her life and a time for happy and greatful memories of Bernice King will be held at the Wilmington Fire House on Sunday, Feb. 25, from 1 to 3 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests gifts in her memory be made to either the Cambridge Volunteer Fire Department, Vermont State Firefighters Association- Benefit Fund Account, Big Brothers/ Big Sisters or the charity of one's choice in care of the COVEY & ALLEN FUNERAL HOME, P.O. Box 215, Wilmington, VT 05363.
