Published in The Hour on Aug. 14, 2008: Peter W. Rysz, 58 of Williamsville, VT died unexpectedly on Monday August 11, 2008. He was born on May 12, 1950 in Norwalk. CT, the son of Joseph and Dorothy (Banzhof) Rysz. Peter's main passion was focusing on his home, his wife Nancy, his three sons, his grandchildren and his dog Sooner. He loved touring with Nancy on his classic Harley Davidson Motorcycle, boating on Lake Spofford and piloting his Piper Lance airplane to Block Island and other destinations. His other pleasures included snowmobiling and helping his sons with projects. Those that knew him best never ceased to be amazed at his uncanny ability to figure out what was needed and decide on the best way to accomplish it. Often people would call on him and seek his advice. It was always his pleasure to help. Simply put, he was a man with broad shoulders and a big heart. Peter co-owned and operated Joe Rysz & Co. on Orchard St., in Norwalk, CT for the majority of his working life. Peter Rysz is survived by his wife of over 38 years Nancy A. (Kirkpatrick)Rysz, three sons Matthew J Rysz of Norwalk, CT, Peter J. Rysz of Williamsville, VT, Christopher P. Rysz and his wife Anne of Danbury, CT, a twin sister Pearl R. Crosier and her husband Sim of Encinitas, CA, two granddaughters Kelsey Alexis Rysz, Peyton Ann Rysz 6 nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by a brother Joseph Rysz Jr, a sister Roberta R. Culhane, and a niece Karen L. Rysz. Services are to be held at the Ker Westerlund Funeral Home in Brattleboro, Vermont on August 15, 2008. Calling hours will begin at 10:30 a.m. and services shall commence at noon. An avid gardener and quilter, Mrs. Culhane was a graduate of the University of Connecticut with a bachelor of science degree in horticulture. She was a Conservation Commissioner for the town of Redding, Conn., and a member and officer of the Redding Land Trust. She was also a co-founder and first President of the Swampfield Land Trust (Danbury, Conn.). Mrs. Culhane was a member and treasurer of the Nutmeg Quilters' Guild (Conn.), and treasurer of the Colonial Piecemakers Quilt Guild (Va.). Mrs. Culhane was assistant branch manager at the Hayestown Office of Union Trust in Conn. and employed at Citizen and Farmers Bank of Williamsburg. She was also circulation assistant at The James City County Library. She is survived by her husband, Michael Culhane of Williamsburg; daughters Megan Galbraith of Cambridge, N.Y., Jennifer Culhane of State College, Pa., and Kerri Culhane of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Pearl Crosier of Orangevale, Calif; brothers, Joseph Rysz, Jr. of Elmore, Vt. and Peter Rysz of Norwalk, Conn.; two grandsons and several nieces and nephews. Services took place in Williamsburg. He was born in Ludlow, Ma. on July 31, 1920, the son of the late Adao and Anna (Dais) Santos of Portugal. He moved to Portugal when he was 9 years old, returned to Ludlow when he was 18 and was drafted into the Army during WWII. He worked for many years in construction and at Westinghouse and retired from Uniroyal where he worked for over 30 years. Abel has lived in Ludlow for 69 years where he was a member of the Gremio Lusitano Club, Ludlow Golden Agers, and Ludlow Senior Center where he loved to go every Wednesday and play cards. He was also an avid gardener and enjoyed being outdoors; and especially loved deep sea fishing and hunting with his sons. Abel leaves his wife of 56 years Lena (Arnone) Santos; 4 sons; Carlo Santos, of Wareham, Ma., Arthur Santos and his wife Carol, of Indian Orchard, Jack Santos and his wife Mary Ellen, of Palmer, and Steven Santos, of Palmer; 10 cherished grandchildren, Kristin, Adam, Anthony, Carlo, Melissa, Desirae, Cassandra, Kaitlin, Christopher and Abel; a great-grandson Caleb, who is 4th generation Santos; and his nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his 2 sisters Amelia Alves and Mary Crisostomo. The family would like to thank Karen Peters for taking care of him for the last year and for being with him in his final hours. Funeral services are on Friday morning at 8:00am from Ludlow Funeral Home with Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:00am in Our Lady of Fatima Church followed by burial in St. Aloysius Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Thursday evening from 4-7pm. |

Abel loved life and was always laughing and playing pranks on friends and family. He enjoyed air soft and Nerf gun play. He was a member of the 11th West Virginia Dismounted Calvary and the 9th MA Light Artillery re-enacting units. Abel leaves behind his parents, Steven A. Santos of West Warren and Cynthia and Holland Jenkins of Palmer, his grandmother Gladys M. Colapietro of Ludlow, his sisters Desirae and Cassandra Santos of Palmer, Kaitlin Santos and her boyfriend Christopher Geisler of West Warren, his uncles and aunts, Arthur and Carol Santos and Jack and MaryEllen Santos of Palmer, Mark and Ann Almeida and Brenda Lee Brooks of Ludlow. Abel also leaves his two nieces, Akasha and Akirah Santos-Thomas of Palmer, as well as many loving cousins. He was predeceased by his grandparents Robert Colapietro, Abel Santos and Lena Santos all of Ludlow and his uncle Carlo Santos of Wareham, MA. Services for Abel will be held on Saturday May 24, 2014 from the Ludlow Funeral Home. A chapel service will begin at 10:00am at the funeral home with burial to follow in Island Pond Cemetery. Visiting hours are Friday evening from 5:00-7:00pm.
