From: ROme Sentinel, Oct. 8, 2009 Charles A. "Chick" Roehrig, 85, flew to a higher level on Thursday, October 8, from the home he built and the family he loved. He was born in Utica on October 1, 1924, son of William H. and Rose Oster Roehrig. Chick was a quiet, modest, multi-talented man, who served his country in the US Air Force for 42 years of Active and Reserve duty. He was an "airport kid" who realized his dream of learning to fly while in high school, enlisted in the Army Air Corps while at Utica Free Academy and worked as a draftsman until he was old enough for active duty. While awaiting his Cadet appointment, Chick qualified as a B-24 gunner, and served as instructor for a class of Yugoslav officers. After earning his Air Corps wings and commission, he became a "Hump Pilot", flying the Himalaya Mountains in the China-Burma-India Theater 4th Combat Cargo Group. Among his many medals are the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal and Asiatic Campaign Medal with two battle stars. He remained an active pilot and experimental aircraft builder for his entire life. Chick enjoyed all kinds of music, from swing and jazz to symphony and opera. He enjoyed painting in a variety of mediums, and received several awards for his paintings and drawings. He was a runner, and ran the Barneveld to WIBX Heart Run for many years, and always looked forward to the Boilermaker, which he ran for 17 years. In his professional career, he represented on site the architectural firm of Bice & Baird, working with the renowned designer of the Munson-Williams-Proctor museum, Philip Johnson. When the Museum was completed, he remained with MWPI as Chief Engineer, until retiring in 1984. Chick was a parishioner of St. Peter’s Church in North Utica, and a member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society. He was a lifetime member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, the Hump Pilots Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Air Force Association, Disabled American Veterans and the Silver Wings Fraternity. He leaves his beloved family--wife of 62 years, Elaine; two daughters, Jo Ellen of Truxton, NY; Elizabeth "Libby" and her husband Raymond Tedesco of Frankfort; son Michael of Fairport, NY; six grandchildren--Jason Kolberg and wife Janna of Missoula, MT; Sarah Merkley and her fiancé Andrew Neitz, of Rochester, NY; Christopher Merkley of Ithaca, NY; James Tedesco and his wife Danielle of Utica; Elizabeth "Bess" Zarnoch and husband Paul of Marcy, NY; and Emily R. Tedesco of Syracuse, NY; sisters-in-law Gladys Oeser of Sprakers, NY and Thelma Crosier of Reston, VA; brother-in-law Edward Zacaroli of Utica; a granddaughter-in-law, Vanessa Irriger Kolberg; several nieces and nephews; and eight great-grandsons, who loved taking walks and playing with "Grandpa Chick". He was predeceased by his parents, sisters Helen (Mrs. Robert Firsching), Alice (Mrs. Robert Brown), Mary (Mrs. Edward Zacaroli) and brother William J. Roehrig. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday morning at 10:00 AM from St. Peter’s Catholic Church, N. Utica, followed by Military Honors. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon at the Scala & Roefaro Funeral Home, 1122 Culver Ave., Utica. A prayer service will be offered at the conclusion of visitation. In lieu of flowers, please remember the wonderful people of Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc. 4277 Middle Settlement Rd. New Hartford, NY 13413. Online message of sympathy www.scalaroefaro.com |
