Published in The Berkshire Eagle on Jan. 22, 2015 1942-2015 David Paul McKeon Sr. died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015 in New Bern, N.C., as a result of a motor vehicle accident. He was born in North Adams on September 9, 1942 son of the late Thomas F. and Beatrice LePage McKeon, was educated in North Adams schools, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving during the Viet Nam war. He moved to New Bern where he was employed at the Cherry Point Marine Corps base as a civilian. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; sons, David Paul McKeon Jr. and Jimmy Williams, both of New Bern; daughter, Sandy Hoogendorm of Swansboro, N.C., four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers, William and Timothy (Julia) McKeon, both of New Bern, and Dana Davis of Holyoke; two sisters, Mary Ann O'Neill of Northampton and Carol Couture of Adams; several nieces, nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Thomas McKeon Jr. and Benjamin Davis and sister, Jean LaFreniere. Memorial services were held January 7 in New Bern From: New Bern Sun Journal January 7, 2015 Widow recalls husband's death - and a life worth remembering A New Bern family laid to rest the man they all called "Papa" Wednesday - a man whose dying act was aimed at helping one of them. By Sue Book, Sun Journal Staff A New Bern family laid to rest the man they all called "Papa" Wednesday - a man whose dying act was aimed at helping one of them. That was mostly what the late David Paul McKeon Sr. was all about, said Margaret "Gran" McKeon, as she recalled the life of her 72-year-old husband. was mostly what the late David Paul McKeon Sr. was all about, said Margaret "Gran" McKeon, as she recalled the life of her 72-year-old husband. Both husband and wife thought they’d have a few more years to share. But after a happy holiday season full of family, the couple left their Old Pollocksville Road home near River Bend late Saturday afternoon to help granddaughter Amber Vazreau after a minor accident on U.S. 70 near Williams Road in James City. Both walked down the service road near the Diamond Club, Margaret McKeon recalled. "I was not far in front of him," she said. "We’d just crossed the service road and started walking toward the accident on the edge of the road. We didn’t want to get into the traffic on 70. "Out of nowhere I heard a noise. It was like I wasn’t there. I heard my granddaughter saying 'Papa, please breathe, Papa.’ I didn’t know what had happened. I went over to him. It was Papa on the ground. He’d been hit by an SUV." Even though she had been walking near her husband, Margaret McKeon was not hit. "We don’t know how this could have happened without hitting me too," she said. "I guess it was Godly intervention to get me out of the way. I was directly in front of him." The incident occurred around 6 p.m. as state troopers were at the first accident scene. David McKeon was quickly taken to New Bern’s CarolinaEast Medical Center. But the Navy veteran of more than a decade, who survived a stint in Vietnam, was pronounced dead on arrival. "Papa was from Massachusetts and I’m originally from West Virginia," Margaret McKeon said. "I’ve been here since the mid-’60s and he came in the early '70s. He had a brother who lived here and, after going through a divorce, decided to come down. We met and that was it; he stayed." She had two children from a previous marriage and "you would have never known that Sandy and Jimmy were not his blood children or the grandchildren. He considered them his. We had a son together but he treated them all the same." Margaret McKeon described her husband as a family man who liked to help others. "He was a helper, a quiet man, a man of few words, but he loved his family," she said. "If they were happy, he was happy." Margaret McKeon also described him as a jack-of-all-trades who loved to work. He could design ingenious ways to cope with things such as keeping the squirrels and sparrows away from her precious bluebird feeder and birdbath. As for personal hobbies, David McKeon had been a bowler "years ago, but he had back surgery, then wrist surgery and had to give that up," she said. "Being from Massachusetts, he was an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan and had all the caps and T-shirts," Margaret McKeon said. "He went to work, came home, and loved to watch baseball and football. If it wasn’t a ball game, it was SportsCenter." David McKeon worked in civil service at Cherry Point for many years in shipping and receiving, she said. When much of that work was contracted, he took early retirement and signed on with contractor Genco. "He was still working and liked to help other people. He loved the people he worked with and they loved him," she said. "We are so humbled by outpouring of love, the visits, the calls, even children who grew up in this neighborhood who have called and grown men who have just broken with the sadness," Margaret McKeon continued. "We knew he was a good man, but I would have never dreamed he’d made that kind of impact in this world." The man who troopers say was driving the SUV that struck him as it traveled east on the service road has been charged with DWI and may face other charges, but Margaret McKeon said, "It doesn’t matter how this happened." Neither she nor other family members "feel that Papa would want to make life worse for him and his family." "Our hearts are saddened for them, too," Margaret McKeon said. "Their lives were ruined. There is enough heartache in their world, and we are sorry for that too. We have a strong faith and belief in God and believe everything happens for a reason." She has been amazed by the broad community response to the family’s loss. "We knew friends and neighbors would come to comfort us, but you don’t expect people you hardly know to go out of their way, to come and bring food," she said. "There is not a want that hasn’t be met." While trying to remain strong, as Papa would wish, Margaret McKeon said, "I have my moments. I’ll miss his generous, gentle soul that catered even to my whims. We were talking about retirement - when, how. That’s not an issue now." David McKeon Jr. added about his elder namesake McKeon: "He was a great father and a great mentor. He will be truly missed." |
