From Rootsweb, posted by Joan Nichols, November 2008: There is a website online, "Name Changes in Berkshire County." In 1847, Joseph Crosier Gallup, a resident of Adams, MA had his name changed to Joseph Crosier Marsdale. At the same time his four children and his wife's surname were changed to Marsdale. His wife was Laura Jane Cone. By 1850, he appears to have another wife named Harriet; at least Laura Jane wasn't with him. Somewhere along there she married a Hodges, first name unknown. Joseph was probably the son of Beniah and Sally (Crosier) Gallup, born in 1814 in Halifax, Windham Co., VT. The family later lived in Searsburg, Bennington Co., VT. It is said that Joseph died in Hartland, Windsor Co., VT in 1873. In 1870 he seems to be in Lebanon, Grafton Co., NH. I have not been able to find him buried in the online Hartland cemeteries. I would like to discover why the surname was changed, and other details |

[houghtling.FTW] From Genealogies of the First Settlers of Albany - "Hendrik Marselis was one of Melyn's colonists of Staten Island, having come over probably with the others in the New Netherland's Fortune in 1650. In 1654, he received a grant of a lot in Beverwyck. When Staten Island was attacked by the Indians in 1655, he fled with his wife, two children (daughters) and servant, and removed to Fort Orange, where he made a permanent settlement. In 1673, he swelt "behind Kinderhook" where his son-in-law, Matthys Coenraedse lived. His other daughter married Patrick McGregory. He (Hendrik) acted as city porter in 1667, in which year he died about Nov. 1. His wife was Tryn Van den Bergh." |

North Adams Transcript Monday, June 25, 1956 Clarksburg Man's Fish Nearly Matches Record Sherman reservoir in Whitingham Vt has given up its second monstrous brown trout in four years. While fishing there yesterday afternoon Robert Martell of Hall's Ground Clarksburg landed a 32 inch brownie measuring 20 inches in girth and tipping the scales at ?? pounds It weighed 16.5 pounds dressed. The prize catch came close to matching the biggest brown trout ever caught in Sherman pond which set a new record for the state of Vermont and also was claimed by many fish and game officials as the biggest ever caught in the East. That prize specimen was pulled out of Sherman reservoir June 14 1952 by Alfred 0. Palmer of Readsboro Vt It weighed 29.5 pounds was 37 inches long and had a waistline of 22 inches. Palmer made his catch in a orthodox manner using simply a FLy rod with worm bait. Martell using a spinning outfit had a half-hour battle with the monster and in the final stages was assisted in landing it into the boat by his father-in-law Winfield Murchie of Union street. The Martell family had gone to Sherman Reservoir on a picnic Martell after catching a rainbow trout was planning to re turn to shore to display that catch when he decided to fish a few minutes longer And that decision paid off with hh big catch. |
