Individuals : MATTHEW Mariece

Quote from the original source document :
From: San Francisco Chronicle, Apr. 27, 2014
Mariece passed away quietly in Seattle, Washington from complications related to Alzheimer's Disease. Known for most of her life to her family and friends as "Mouse," she was born at Alta Bates Hospital, in Berkeley, California to Alexander and Edna Mariece Crosier Matthew. She grew up in South Africa, graduating in 1945 from Pretoria Girls High School, where she was captain of the Field Hockey Team. Later that year she traveled with her family on a Liberty Ship to New York, continuing by train to Salina, Utah, her mother's childhood home. She graduated from Westminster College, Salt Lake City, where she also met Albert Batey. They married in August 1949 and moved to Berkeley, California soon after, where they raised their three daughters. Mariece was an accomplished potter, seamstress, and gardener, a great cook and hostess, a Girl Scout troop leader and very active in the PTA, but most of all, a wonderful Mom. In her 40s she earned her Masters of Library Science from UC Berkeley and began her 30-year career as a children's librarian with Oakland public schools. She was dedicated to her students and over the years took many disadvantaged and at-risk kids under her wing, determined to share with them the power and joy of books. In her 60s she met Norman Fowler and they spent years of happy adventure together, traveling the West Coast in their VW van with their trusty dog Toty, and journeying to Great Britain, Botswana and South Africa. Mariece loved books, botany, entomology, marine biology, nudibranchs, birds, plants, gardens, children, books, dogs, cats, birds, turtles, fish, hamsters, rabbits, rats, and all the other pets in her menagerie, books, tide-pooling, beachcombing, traveling, camping, canning, cooking, entertaining and books. Most of all she loved gathering friends and family at her table to enjoy a wonderful meal and conversation. She was always the last to finish eating because of the stories she had to share with us. She was preceded in death by her ex-husband Albert, her long-time companion Norman, her sister Margaret Meredith, her good friend Hazel Flick, and her son-in-law Larry Weinberg. She is survived by her sister Jeanne Matthew of Oakland, her daughters Valerie, Seattle; Cecily Caceu, Portland, Oregon; Hilary, San Francisco; her son-in-law Bogdan Caceu; and her granddaughter Celeste Caceu. At her request, no services will be held. To honor Mariece's memory read a book to a child, plant some flowers or stop to listen to a bird sing. Donations in her memory can be made to the Ruth Bancroft Garden, 1552 Bancroft Road, Walnut Creek, CA 94598 www.ruthbancroftgarden.org , the Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association www.berkeleyheritage.com or the Alzheimer's Association.

Deon Mortensen Ludlow, our wonderful and so very loved mother, passed away at home on Friday, July 31, 2015, surrounded by her family. Deon was born May 1, 1934 in Spanish Fork, Utah, to Leon and Hazel Barney Mortensen. She attended schools in Spanish Fork, graduating from Spanish Fork High School.
She married the love of her life, Allen G. Ludlow, on February 23, 1955, in Spanish Fork; and they were sealed for all time and eternity in the LDS Manti Temple on October 15, 1966. In the early years of her marriage, Deon worked at Mountain Bell in Spanish Fork until her family started. She then was a fantastic stay-at-home mom, raising six kids.
After the kids were grown, she drove school bus for 16 years for Nebo School District, making countless friends along the way. She was a great homemaker and excellent baker. Her home was always open to family and friends.
Many hours were spent at her kitchen table sharing coffee and her famous cinnamon rolls. Deon canned and bottled all fruits and vegetables. She enjoyed playing tennis and softball, liked bowling and anything in the outdoors, especially camping with family and friends.
She spent many days at the sheep camp with Allen and later with her kids. She loved to hike, climbing Timpanogos Mountain many times. She also completed several rigorous hikes in southern Utah.
Always active, she loved yard work and kept a neat, well-groomed yard. She was a soft touch for all animals. She loved and pampered her dogs and fed many stray cats over the years.
She also had several bird feeders in her yard and liked watching the birds come to visit. Deon is an active member of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints, where she served tirelessly in the Leland Ward Primary and Young Women organizations, as well as the Relief Society. She was camp director for the ward for many years.
