From: San Francisco Chronicle, Apr. 27, 2014 Mariece passed away quietly in Seattle, Washington from complications related to Alzheimer's Disease. Known for most of her life to her family and friends as "Mouse," she was born at Alta Bates Hospital, in Berkeley, California to Alexander and Edna Mariece Crosier Matthew. She grew up in South Africa, graduating in 1945 from Pretoria Girls High School, where she was captain of the Field Hockey Team. Later that year she traveled with her family on a Liberty Ship to New York, continuing by train to Salina, Utah, her mother's childhood home. She graduated from Westminster College, Salt Lake City, where she also met Albert Batey. They married in August 1949 and moved to Berkeley, California soon after, where they raised their three daughters. Mariece was an accomplished potter, seamstress, and gardener, a great cook and hostess, a Girl Scout troop leader and very active in the PTA, but most of all, a wonderful Mom. In her 40s she earned her Masters of Library Science from UC Berkeley and began her 30-year career as a children's librarian with Oakland public schools. She was dedicated to her students and over the years took many disadvantaged and at-risk kids under her wing, determined to share with them the power and joy of books. In her 60s she met Norman Fowler and they spent years of happy adventure together, traveling the West Coast in their VW van with their trusty dog Toty, and journeying to Great Britain, Botswana and South Africa. Mariece loved books, botany, entomology, marine biology, nudibranchs, birds, plants, gardens, children, books, dogs, cats, birds, turtles, fish, hamsters, rabbits, rats, and all the other pets in her menagerie, books, tide-pooling, beachcombing, traveling, camping, canning, cooking, entertaining and books. Most of all she loved gathering friends and family at her table to enjoy a wonderful meal and conversation. She was always the last to finish eating because of the stories she had to share with us. She was preceded in death by her ex-husband Albert, her long-time companion Norman, her sister Margaret Meredith, her good friend Hazel Flick, and her son-in-law Larry Weinberg. She is survived by her sister Jeanne Matthew of Oakland, her daughters Valerie, Seattle; Cecily Caceu, Portland, Oregon; Hilary, San Francisco; her son-in-law Bogdan Caceu; and her granddaughter Celeste Caceu. At her request, no services will be held. To honor Mariece's memory read a book to a child, plant some flowers or stop to listen to a bird sing. Donations in her memory can be made to the Ruth Bancroft Garden, 1552 Bancroft Road, Walnut Creek, CA 94598 www.ruthbancroftgarden.org , the Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association www.berkeleyheritage.com or the Alzheimer's Association. |
