From: The Recorder on Oct. 6, 2016
WELLFORD, S.C. - Merwin "Wimpy" Tirrell, 82, of Wellford, SC formerly of Colrain, died Wednesday September 28, 2016 at Hospice Of The Carolina Foothills in Landrum SC. The youngest of 13 children of Fred Sumner Tirrell and Alice Rachel (DeVerger) Tirrell, he was born October 23, 1933. He married the love of his life Ruth May (Wickline) Tirrell on May 26, 1955. Together they raised 6 children. He is survived by his wife Ruth, daughters Barbara (Neil) Raymond of Buckland, MA, June Ahearn of Colrain, MA, Shirley (Web) Gridley of Chesapeake, VA, Ruth (Michael) Fontanella of Lyman, SC and son Glenn (Sue) Tirrell of Campobello, SC. 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 12 great great grandchildren. He also leaves a son-in-law, Larry Dumas of Colrain and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his 9 brothers and 3 sisters, a son Robert Brzozowy in 2011 and great grandson Dakota Crochier in 1998.
He was employed for many years by the Greenfield Public Works Department, holding various positions. He retired January 1, 2000. In August 2005 he and his wife moved to Wellford, SC.
Wimpy enjoyed cb radio and was known as "Running Fox". While living in Colrain, Wimpy and Ruth would, at any given time, have a house full of family and friends playing music. He played the guitar. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. After moving to South Carolina, Wimpy was unable to hunt any longer so his grandson Ed Sumner set up a deer feeder and trail cam in his backyard so he could still enjoy the deer. For fun, he and Ruth enjoyed a weekly Senior BINGO at the Local Bi-LO. He and Ruth also loved getting together with their son Glenn and several other musicians on Saturday nights in Gaffney, SC where he played his beloved country music.
He will always be remembered for his stories and sense of humor. No matter the situation Wimpy could and would make you laugh. He will be deeply missed and greatly remembered by all.
Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Condolences can be sent to 1924 Ballenger Rd., Wellford, SC 29385.
