HUGHES -- ORVAL D. (CDR US NAVY RETIRED) Resident of Albuquerque since 1951 passed away November 29, 2011. Orval was born on February 2, 1921 in Watertown, NY, the son of the late Edwin M. Hughes and Esther Crosier Hughes. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Edith Blust Hughes; his son David Hughes of Niskayuna, NY; son Bill Hughes and wife Sylvia; son Richard Hughes and wife Connie; daughter Peggy Miller, all of Albuquerque; and daughter Elizabeth Kasparian and husband Joel of Hacienda Heights, CA; 20 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren (and counting). He is predeceased by his sister, Doris Hughes Jordan of Morgan Center, VT. Orval grew up in Utica, NY earning the Eagle Scout award. He graduated with a BS, Phi Beta Kappa from Colgate University in May 1942 and immediately entered the Navy and World War II. Ensign Hughes served on the USS Herbert, both in the Atlantic and Pacific until the war's end August 1945. Orval married Edith Louise Blust September 17th, 1943. He earned an MS in Chemical Engineering from Syracuse University in 1947. For four years he taught high school science in Boonville, NY. Upon the outbreak of the Korean War, the Navy recalled Orval to active duty and sent the growing Hughes family to Sandia Base. CDR Hughes's Navy career included duty at sea and on shore: 1951-1953 Sandia Base; 1954 USS Los Angeles;1955-1956 XO USS Higbee;1957-1960 XO Purdue University Naval ROTC;1961-1962 Gunnery Officer USS Valley Forge; 1963-1966 XO Office Naval Research, Chicago; 1967-1968 CO Naval Reserve Center, Albuquerque. He retired from the US Navy in 1968. Orval immediately returned to a second career in public education teaching Naval Junior ROTC at Highland and West Mesa high schools. He earned a Ph.D from the University of New Mexico. As a NM Highlands professor, Dr. Hughes taught extension courses to teachers throughout New Mexico until his retirement in 1998. Orval remained active with the NM Association of Educational Retirees and was instrumental in the founding of the New Mexico Golden Apple for the Teacher Award. Orval has been an active member of the Rotary Club of Albuquerque since 1978. He was a member of Immanuel Presbyterian Church where Services will be held on Saturday December 3, 2:30PM, 114 Carlisle SE, Albuquerque. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Golden Apple Foundation of New Mexico.

          WHITE CREEK - Edna Margaret Woodcock, loving mother, and cherished grandmother went to be with the Lord peacefully on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008.
          Edna was born on Sept. 15, 1926, to Otto and Florence Robertson Bodenstab of White Creek.
          She walked from Bodenstab Lane to the one-room school house at Post Corners in White Creek for her elementary education. She then graduated from Hooscik Falls High School and went on to earn a Registered Nursing degree from Samaritan Hospital. She interned at New York University and then earned a degree in Theology from Moody University in Chicago.
          Edna was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Harvey Woodcock Sr. of 16 years. The two were married in May of 1954 and had four children, Judy Woodcock Gerardi of Saratoga Springs, Jinny Woodcock Vicroy and her husband, Steve, of Lexington, Ky., Jan Woodcock and wife, Deb, of Cambridge; and a daughter-in-law, Erin Woodcock Sheridan also of Cambridge.
          Edna was predeceased by one son, Raymond Harvey Woodcock Jr. "Chief" and by her siblings: Otto, Carl, and Noel Bodenstab. Her brother, Orin Bodenstab and wife, Maxine live in Shushan, N.Y.
          Many people will remember Edna for her dedication to the Lord by helping children. Edna was an active participant with Vacation Bible School, Sunday School and Parents Night Out. Edna's international role as the Northeast Representative for Compassion International and the Capital Area Baptist Association led her to participate in mission trips to Haiti, India, Kenya and Uganda.
          Edna retired from Mary McClellan after over 40 years of service as the Head Nurse in the Recovery Room. Many community members awoke to her calming presence after their surgery.
          She is survived by 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren who all have fond memories of their weekend sleepovers and trips to camp in Sugarbush, Vt. with "Grandma Woodcock."
          Calling hours will be held on Saturday, Nov. 22 at the First Baptist Church, in Cambridge from 2 to 4 p.m.
          A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Nov. 23, at the First Baptist Church at 2 p.m.
          Memorial donations can be sent to the First Baptist Church, in Cambridge for Compassion International.
          Arrangements are under the direction of Ackley & Ross Funeral Home, 73 West Main St., Cambridge.

          Born in North Adams on Nov. 15, 1926, son of Henri and Corinne Filliault Champagne, he attended the former Notre Dame Elementary School.
          Mr. Champagne was a self-employed roofer for many years, retiring several months ago. Earlier, he was employed by the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams and the Bear Swamp Hydroelectric Plant in Rowe, and was a sales representative for the former Tilo Roofing Co. in Pittsfield. He also worked with his brother, who operated a trucking company, years ago.
          He was a communicant of Notre Dame Church and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, both in North Adams. He enjoyed bowling and playing cards, and was an outdoorsman.
          He leaves three daughters, Sherry Dunne and Bonnie Crosier, both of Florida, and Melanie Champagne of North Adams; two stepsons, T. Michael Hohn and David Hohn, both of Florida; a brother, Armand Champagne of Villa Rica, Ga.; six sisters, Loretta Smith, Rita Langlois and Eileen Hall, all of Williamstown, Cecelia Johnson of Pownal, Vt., and Theresa Roberts and Claire LeSage, both of North Adams; his former wife, Barbara Brown Kornn of North Adams; 15 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, David Champagne, and a daughter, Michelle Crews.
          FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for George Henry Champagne, who died Monday, Dec. 5, 2005, will be Friday at 10 at AUGE-SAN SOUCIE-SIMMONS Funeral Home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Anthony's Church in North Adams. Burial will be in the spring in Church Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Florida Parent-Teacher Group or the Florida Senior Center through the funeral home, 46 North Church St., North Adams, MA 01247.           Born in Havana, Cuba, on April 12, 1926, son of Manuel and Maria Soto Canitrot, he attended schools there. At the age of 17, he moved to Orense, Spain, where he lived for about 18 years until coming to the United States and settling in North Adams.
          Mr. Canitrot was employed by the former General Cable Co. in Williamstown, retiring in 1987. Before that, he worked for the former Conalco Inc.
          He enjoyed sports, especially horse racing, boxing and soccer.
          His wife, the former Shirley M. Bourell, whom he married May 2, 1964, died on August 28, 1997
          He leaves a son, Jose M. Canitrot of North Adams; a daughter, Cristina M. Hickey of Wichita, Kan.; two sisters, Carmen Canitrot Rivero and Angelina Canitrot, both of Spain, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Two stepchildren, Michelle M. Crews and David F. Champagne, are deceased.
          FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Jose Canitrot, who died June 19, 2004, will be Tuesday, June 22, at 10 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 W. She married Edward George Chatfield in 1950, and they lived together in Winchester. Virginia worked for Litchfield Hills Visiting Nurses, then the Berkshire Pharmacy, until she retired. She was a member of the Winchester Grange #74, and VFW Ladies Auxiliary #296. Ginger was a beautiful woman with a fun-loving spirit and a positive outlook on life. She was always busy; and enjoyed gardening, and cooking. She had a passion for wildlife and liked feeding, watching and taking pictures of them. In addition to her husband, Virginia is survived by four children, Edward “Kirby” G Chatfield, Jr., of Hawaii, Gwendolyn “Wendy” Hayes of Winsted, Jeff Chatfield of Winchester and Terrence “Terry” Chatfield of Ashburn, Virginia; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Shirley Veronesi of Winsted; a brother, Joe Boutin of Florida; many cousins, nieces and nephews. Friends may call on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 922 Main St., Winsted from 1 - 3 PM with a funeral service at 3PM

Edward "Ed" Chatfield, 87, of Winchester, CT, passed away on Sunday June 22, 2014. He was born April 2, 1927, to the late Edward Chatfield and Lepha (Crosier) Chatfield.
          He was predeceased by Virginia (Boutin) Chatfield, his wife, of 64 years.
          After growing up in the Gilbert Home in Winsted, Ed worked for the Connecticut State Highway Department, Kenwood Tree Service, and O&G, until he retired. Ed served in the US Army during The Korean War as a Carpenter in the 808 Engineer Aviation Battalion He was a member of the Winchester Grange #74, and VFW #296.
          Ed was known as a great mechanic and could fix just about anything. He enjoyed gardening, his neighbors and country western music.
          Ed is survived by four children: Gwendolyn "Wendy" Hayes of Winsted; Edward "Kirby" Chatfield, Jr., of Hawaii; Jeff Chatfield of Winchester; and Terrence "Terry" Chatfield, of Ashburn, Virginia. In addition, he is survived by seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, Luana Chatfield, Marion Daigneault, Stanley Griswold, and Fred Chatfield.
          Friends may call on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 922 Main St., Winsted from 9 - 11AM. Military Services will follow at 11 A.M., at the funeral home.
