Alan N. Magnus, 51
Marstons Mills - Alan N. Magnus, 51, of Marstons Mills, died at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston on Jan. 21, 2013.
He was the love of Colleen S. (Reardon) Magnus.
Described by his loved ones as a “Renaissance Man,” Mr. Magnus was a dynamic and passionate person whose desire for learning and growth couldn't be easily sated. Whether dazzling local audiences with his awe-inspiring vocals or impressing friends with his extensive historical knowledge, he fully invested himself in each and every pursuit.
Nothing but the best was acceptable to him, and that showed in all he did. He spent years fishing out of Hyannis Harbor, and performed in numerous local bands including Skin Deep, Magnus & Michaels, Live Wire and Psyd FX. His love of family was his driving force and he did everything necessary to support them.
A man of many trades, he will be most remembered as a fearless commercial fisherman and show-stopping rock star. His life story could be read in his myriad tattoos and his collection of cranial adornments was second to none.
Born to a large family in Brockton, Mr. Magnus relocated to the Cape as a teen where his quick wit and loving personality endeared him to countless others every day. He graduated from Barnstable High School in 1981, where he met Colleen, his wife of 30 years.
Through the years his family has expanded to include those connected by blood and those connected by love. His legacy of love, humor, passion, and excellence will not be lost with his passing, but will live on in the hearts of his family and friends
In addition to Colleen, he is survived by his children, Rory of Portland, OR, Joseph of Centerville, Emily of Canton, Siobhan of Marstons Mills, Ceili of Marstons Mills, Azora of Marstons Mills, and Nicholas of Wareham; and his siblings, David Norcross, Jr. of Wareham, Pamela Newcomb of Plymouth, Thomas Norcross of Wareham, Wallita Crawford of Springfield, and Kathleen Magnus of Florida. He is predeceased by his sisters, Linda Norcross and Florence “Fluffy” Norcross.
The funeral service is private.
The family will be accepting donations to benefit Mr. Magnus’s youngest children, Ceili, Azora, and Nicholas. For information on donating, contact Emily Magnus at emilyemagnus@gmail.com.

Siobhan Magnus rising to pop stardom
By K.C. MYERS
Long before a national television audience saw signs of stardom in Siobhan Magnus on "American Idol," this 20-year-old from Marstons Mills picked up fans on stage and off.
Siobhan Magnus belts out a song during the "American Idol" top 12 competition in Los Angeles.
Siobhan Magnus' fourth-grade chorus teacher remembers the first time the quiet child sang "Tomorrow" from "Annie."
It was the first time the future "American Idol" top 10 finalist sang publicly.
"It was such a moment," said Marge Dolby, Magnus' chorus teacher at Cotuit Elementary School. "Everyone just got quiet, because we didn't know. And then we knew. We knew what she had. It was a natural gift."
Long before a national television audience saw signs of stardom, this 20-year-old from Marstons Mills picked up fans on stage and off.
She was involved in the Barnstable High School Drama Club from the third grade and performed in 36 productions, according to drama department head John Sullivan.
Magnus spent more time in lead roles than anyone to go through the drama club in his 32 years at the school, Sullivan said.
Appearing first as a poppy and a munchkin in the 1999 "Wizard of Oz" production, Magnus entered high school already possessing "a body of work that's hard to compare," Sullivan said.
Ginger Mochen, whose son performed with Magnus growing up, felt her star power early. When Magnus was 14, Mochen said to her, "'I should get your autograph.'
"She has such stage presence," Mochen added. "I've loved her from day one."
But talent is just one side of her story. Friends, family and teachers describe a compassionate young woman, who can be fun and very silly, but who's also uncommonly thoughtful.
She does not drink alcohol, yet wears tattoos and at one point shaved off her long hair.
"I cannot say typical, because she's nicer than your typical teenager," said Mia Walsh, a family friend.
"She's a sweetheart, a very caring, compassionate person," said Jordan Bonina, who plays drums in the band Lunar Valve, in which Magnus is the lead singer. "She's really into her friends. If something's wrong, she's really there for you."
In an interview for "American Idol" Magnus said she's been forced to take on responsibilities in her life, and has good practice handling pressure.
Her father, Alan, said he doesn't want to "work this into a sob story" but like all families they've had hard times.
A local rock musician, Alan is disabled following accidents as a truck driver. His wife, Colleen, was recently laid off after many years working at Border's Books, Alan said.
As a teenager, Siobhan took on the role of caring for her two little sisters, Ceili, now 10, and Azora, 8.
Partially because of her little sisters, Magnus became a feminist in high school.
"She would always say how much she wanted to go out and talk to girls, especially because of her two little sisters," Bonina said.
The pressure on girls to dress and look a certain way always bothered her.
Her own unconventional style helps her stand out now, even in the star-making machine of Hollywood. For one "Idol" performance she donned skinny jeans and a faux-hawk, and another she wore a strapless dress with combat boots and curly hair.
"She hates Barbies," said her father.
Though focused and mature beyond her years, Siobhan floundered after high school.
Magnus auditioned but was not accepted into the Berklee College of Music, said her father. She dropped out of Salem State College after one semester. The fact that she didn't like to party made her feel especially out of place at school, Alan said.
Magnus was apprenticing in a glass-blowing shop in Hyannis when she got serious about advice given half in jest to her for many years. She tried out for "American Idol."
"I cannot think of a more deserving kid," Sullivan said. "It's nice, when nice happens to nice."
It surprises no one who knows the Magnus family that Siobhan would be involved in the arts.
Alan Magnus has been a charismatic rock-and-roll band member and piano player since he attended Barnstable High School's alternative learning program in the 1970s.
His brother, Dave, taught him to play the piano with the song "House of the Rising Sun" by The Animals.
"I thought my brother wrote it," Alan said.
Alan, in turn, taught Siobhan piano with the same song.
And in a gesture typical of Siobhan's thoughtfulness, she sang the soulful tune on "American Idol" while her father was with her in Hollywood.
Her oldest brother, Rory, now 27, led the charge into the Barnstable Drama Club, inspiring his siblings to take minor roles as soon as they were old enough.
Siobhan's second brother, Joe Magnus, plays the accordion, cello, piano and guitar, Alan said.
Emily, her older sister, is an excellent flutist, he added.
For 13 straight years, at least one Magnus appeared in a Barnstable Drama Club play, Alan said.
"We were always there," Alan said of he and Colleen. "We had real crummy cars, but we were always there."
"Growing up in that family, it was a fantasy atmosphere," Walsh said. "The kids were always knights, faeries and goblins. They were always dressing up and making up stories."
Rory, who does stop animation for a company in Oregon, has been Siobhan's hero, said her best friend, Stephanie Gianno, of Marstons Mills.
Gianno and Magnus shared the 2008 Barnstable High School senior class superlative "most theatrical." Magnus also was named "most individual."
"He always puts his talents to good use and that's what she tries to do," Gianno said.
While her teachers and classmates didn't see her talents until fourth grade, Magnus had been performing for years for a sizable audience: her family.
Her father has 10 siblings, and her mother is one of six.
"When we get together, it's loud," Alan Magnus said.
Colleen's parents, the recently retired Barnstable Judge Joseph Reardon and his wife, Carolyn, have a big house in Sandwich where the family gathers at holidays.
On a grand piano, Alan Magnus and his children would play and sing.
"Siobhan ate it up," he said. "We're kind of hams."
When Siobhan was 10 years old, her mother had Ceili and then Azora.
Her two little sisters had a profound influence on Siobhan's life.
"Siobhan is almost like a mother to them," Alan said. "She's incredible with the girls. She has so much patience."
By the time Siobhan entered high school, she was also busy taking on leads in plays. She took a vocal jazz elective and was in chamber chorus.
The drama club suited her perfectly, her father said.
"Ed O'Toole (Shakespeare teacher and drama coach) is Mr. Understanding, and Mr. Sullivan is very critical," Alan said. "For 10 years, Mr. Sullivan let her have it."
"American Idol" judge Simon Cowell has nothing on Sullivan, who is legendary for shaping high school musicals into professional productions.
Sullivan said he only pushes his actors as far as he thinks they can go. And after performing with him for many years, Siobhan was not afraid of him, Sullivan said.
Despite demands on her schedule that made her late for some rehearsals, Sullivan said nothing distracted Magnus during practices and performances.
It's been that way ever since he met the "cute kid with a big voice," Sullivan said.
She was the first to memorize her lines.
"When she was on stage, I never had to worry," Sullivan said.
"I'm not going to say pressure didn't affect her," he added. "But she handled pressure better than most kids I've seen."
When viewers see her on "American Idol" answering questions and taking criticism calmly, that's just how she is, Sullivan said.
"She's always had a cool, calm exterior," he said.
Her personality, almost as much as her singing, is winning her fans in exactly the way Siobhan - a young feminist and proud nonconformist - might hope.
She has a fan club in Plainfield High School in Illinois, said Kim Rumberger, who works in the technology department at Barnstable High School. They make banners and wear buttons in her honor.
"They identify with Siobhan so much," said Rumberger, who knows a teacher at that school. "They are so inspired by how she is different and not afraid to be different. And by the way she handles criticism. And she's so talented."

Individuals : Joseph Crosier (Gallup) MARSDALE
From Rootsweb, posted by Joan Nichols, November 2008:
There is a website online, "Name Changes in Berkshire County." In 1847,
Joseph Crosier Gallup, a resident of Adams, MA had his name changed to
Joseph Crosier Marsdale. At the same time his four children and his
wife's surname were changed to Marsdale.
His wife was Laura Jane Cone. By 1850, he appears to have another wife
named Harriet; at least Laura Jane wasn't with him. Somewhere along
there she married a Hodges, first name unknown.
Joseph was probably the son of Beniah and Sally (Crosier) Gallup, born
in 1814 in Halifax, Windham Co., VT. The family later lived in
Searsburg, Bennington Co., VT. It is said that Joseph died in Hartland,
Windsor Co., VT in 1873. In 1870 he seems to be in Lebanon, Grafton
Co., NH. I have not been able to find him buried in the online Hartland
cemeteries.
I would like to discover why the surname was changed, and other details
