SEARSBURG -- Alta Davis, 91, of Searsburg, died June 24, 2003 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, after a period of failing health.
Alta was born Alta Hullett, Nov. 28, 1911 in Springfield, Mass. She came to Wilmington as a young woman and had lived in Searsburg for well over 50 years.
Mrs. Davis had a full and varied life. She worked as one of the first telephone operators in Searsburg, drove a school bus for many years, worked for Bennington Area Home Health and held a variety of other jobs in the area.
Many older ones in the area still recall the days when Alta owned and operated the World?s End Diner on top of Searsburg Mountain. She was a renowned cook among the many truck drivers who used that route, as well as to the locals.
Her love of cooking lasted her entire life and she very often would repay a neighborly favor with a cream cheese pie or some other favorite.
In her younger years Alta served in various town offices, most recently as town auditor. She loved to travel and had driven many a mile including trips to California and Florida. Alta was an animal lover and cared for many, many pets over the years. It was often joked in later years that her cats were giving up some of their ?nine lives? to extend hers. Alta also loved people and was deeply troubled when she would hear of people suffering due to illness, war, crime, natural disasters, or for any reason.
In 1995, Mrs. Davis became one of Jehovah?s Witnesses and was a member of the Wilmington Congregation. She loved to talk about her Bible-based beliefs whenever she could find a listening ear. Alta was predeceased by her husband Howard Davis in 1971 and a son Ronald in 1990.
She is survived by a daughter, Helen; a stepson, Howard Davis Jr. of Bennington; four grandchildren; a very close cousin, Dennis Yount and his wife Gail of Hillsboro N.H.; a very close friend of 28 years, Tammy Lacey and her husband of Halifax, Vt. whose children affectionately called her "Granny Alta" ; another very close friend, Josie Kilbride and her husband of Searsburg, who tirelessly cared for her cats during Alta?s many hospital stays; and many other close friends throughout her town and congregation.
rrangements were through the Eternal Flame Crematorium of Brattleboro.
Published in the Bennington Banner on 7/12/2003.
