Walter S. Crosier of 8117 Cabernet Court in San Jose California died peacefully in his sleep on August 25. He battled many illnesses in recent years, but would not rest until after celebrating his 50th wedding anniversary and having all of his family present.
Walter was born in North Adams Massachusetts, son of Walter S. and Felicie (Strickland) Crosier. He graduated from the New Hampton School in New Hampton New Hampshire and Hamilton College in Clinton New York. He was a successful industrial salesman and moved his family to California in 1970, settling in the Willow Glen area.
Walt had an amazing capacity to love and leaves behind many cherished memories from hundreds of friends and loved ones, both young and old, that have come to know Walt over the past years in Willow Glen, greater San Jose, and Massachusetts. You know who you are and you know Walt cared about you always.
He leaves his wife of over 50 years, Betty, and three sons; Walter Joseph Crosier and his wife Sondra of Berkley California; David Crosier, his wife Annemarie and their daughter Arden of Sisters Oregon; and Peter , his wife Alyson, their sons Will and Drew, and daughter Erin of Redmond Washington.
He leaves a brother John D. Crosier of Dover New Hampshire. He was a loving brother of Jane Crosier (deceased).
Walter Strickland Crosier ’55
A longtime industrial sales representative, was born on June 10, 1933, in North Adams, MA. The elder son of Walter S., a manufacturing agent, and Felicie Strickland Crosier, he was a grandson of John L. Strickland ’04, a trustee of the College, and nephew of John L. Strickland, Jr. ’30. “Walt” Crosier prepared for college at New Hampton School in New Hampshire and entered Hamilton from Grafton, MA, in 1951. He joined Alpha Delta Chi and, with “an imposing, gregarious presence, he became active on several fronts,” in the words of The Hamiltonian. Class vice president in his junior year, he also lettered in football as a 225-pound tackle for the Continental team. A member of Nous Onze, he was aided by “strong suggestions” from Dean Winton Tolles in attaining his diploma in 1955.
Walt Crosier immediately went to work as a sales representative for the Carborundum Co. in Niagara Fall, NY. Except for the two years with the U.S. Army Signal Corps (1956-58), he remained with the abrasives manufacturing company for most of his working life. During the 1960s he was engaged in sales for Carborundum in Huntington, WV, only to return to the Buffalo area in 1967 to become its manager of sales training. In 1970, he moved permanently to California as a systems specialist with Carborundum’s Western zone. He settled in San Jose and continued to work in sales in Northern California and particularly the Bay Area. He concluded his career as a self-employed manufacturer’s representative.

Walter S. Crosier, who had been plagued with much illness in recent years, was still residing in San Jose when he died on August 25, 2010. Married on July 16, 1960, to May Elizabeth “Betty” Girdler in Huntington, WV, he had joyfully celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary with all his family present just days before his death. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Walter J., David L., and Peter R. Crosier, and four grandchildren as well as his brother, John D. Crosier ’59. A man with “an amazing capacity to love,” Walt Crosier also leaves behind innumerable friends, including many Hamiltonians. In the words of his classmate and fellow Alpha Delt Comer Coppie, Walt was “genuine, with a winning personality who had a lot of friends and no enemies.”

Kathryn Griggs Whaley, 93, of Houston, Texas, died April 29, 2010, at Emeritus of Cy-Fair Assisted Living in Houston, following a valiant fight against pneumonia.
Mrs. Whaley was born Nov. 1, 1916, in McAlester, Okla., to Ruth Landes and Joseph Post Griggs.
She graduated from McAlester High School and attended Chillicothe Business School, Chillicothe and the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Okla., majoring in English.
She married William Harold Whaley Oct. 29, 1937, in Tulsa, Okla., where they made their home and raised three children. Mrs. Whaley was a member of Boston Avenue United Methodist Church and was active in Sunday School class leadership along with her husband.
In 1996 the couple moved to Spalding to Cloverleaf Farm, where they enjoyed 20 years as active members of the community where Mr. Whaley grew up and had deep roots.
He preceded her in death on Oct. 27, 2005, in Houston, Texas. She is also preceded in death by her parents; and by their son, David Landes Whaley, also of Houston, formerly of Oklahoma City.
She was a prolific letter writer and kept up an extensive correspondence through the years with many life-long friends and family members. She was also known for her wry wit and lively conversations. She always sought to find a common ground with everyone, and enjoyed meeting and making friends wherever she went. She will be missed by those who loved her..
Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Ruth, Houston, Texas, and her husband, Dr. David Vosburg; and Norma Jean, and husband, Sam Crozier, of Blaine, Wash. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Kathy Vosburg Miller and husband, Dennis, Houston, Texas, William Bradley Vosburg and wife, Heather, Brentwood, Tenn., Daniel Joseph Rogers and wife, Kris, of Denver, Colo., Jeffrey Kyle Rogers and wife, Sloane, Everett, Wash., Whittney Whaley Lyon and husband, Britt, Rowlett, Texas, William Jason Whaley and wife, Nicole, Santa Monica, Calif., and Annlyn May Whaley, Harlingen, Texas; and 11 great-grandchildren: Gizelle Whaley, Francesca and Giuliana Seretti, Makena Vosburg, Haley and Blake Lyon; Zach, Megan and Drew Rogers; and Kyle and Laurel Rogers.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 7, at Smith Funeral Home & Chapel, Hannibal.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday morning, May 8, at Big Creek Cemetery in Rensselaer. The Rev. P.J. Southam, pastor of Big Creek Presbyterian Church, will officiate.
The daughters of Kathryn Whaley suggest that donations in her name be made to the National Eye Institute which conducts research into macular degeneration, a condition which both of their parents had. Barbara Louise (Griswold) Bishop, 94, of 15 Meridian St., Greenfield, formerly of Shelburne, died at the Buckley HealthCare Center on Tuesday, August 7th, after a brief illness. Born on March 11, l9l9 in Westfield, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Robert Gray and Mary Mariah (Cox) Griswold.
Barbara graduated from Westfield High School with honors and was voted Best Woman Athlete in l937. She then went on to Mt. Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology. After graduation she worked for the Foster D. Snell Co. and Merck Chemical Co.
Barbara was married to Arthur Douglas Bishop of Lisbon, N.H., a lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Aviation Corps on Jan. 9, l943, in Westfield, N.J. After Arthur's active duty in the Navy, they lived in Wayland, MA, until March of l948, when they bought an apple orchard in Shelburne which they ran as Wellsmont Orchard until 2005. Barbara then moved to Greenfield and at the time of her death was residing at The Arbors of Greenfield on Meridian Street.
Barbara and Arthur were active, outdoor people who skied as a family and then became actively involved in Senior racing, which took them to many slopes in Europe and the United States. Barbara won many medals in both domestic and international competitions.
She was an inspiration to many people of Shelburne Center, always out enjoying all weather conditions, whether it be walking to the library or her favorite four-mile-square route through the hill town. After moving to Greenfield, she continued to be an example of fitness and health, walking through town to do her shopping and errands and searching for historic homes. She was an active member of aerobics classes at the YMCA and was honored with a 90th birthday celebration there.
Barbara was predeceased by her husband Arthur in l998; a son, Robert in l980; a grandson, Jeffrey in l998, and a daughter-in-law, Marianne in 2007.
She is survived by two sons: David and his wife, Marcia Schuhle, of Greenfield and Richard of Shelburne. She also leaves three grandchildren: Christopher and his wife, Jamie, of Potomac Falls, VA, Jamieson and his wife, Jamie, of Buckland, MA., and Katherine of Washington, D.C. In addition, she leaves a niece, Judy Armstrong and her husband, Lorrimer of Orleans, MA, and her five great-grandchildren: Lily, Stephen, Andrew, Grayson and Charlotte.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, Aug. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home, 87 Franklin St., Greenfield. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Warm the Children, 14 Hope St., Greenfield, MA 01301 or the YMCA in Greenfield, 451 Main St., Greenfield, MA 01301.

1941 - 2014 ADAMS Donna T. Pulaski, 73, of 75 Commercial St., passed away Sunday, July 13, 2014, at the North Adams Commons. Born in Jankowicze, Poland, on Feb. 2, 1941, daughter of the late Alexander and Elsbeta Supranowicz Grygorcewicz, she came to Pittsfield as a child. Donna was employed at St. Luke's Hospital as a nurse's aid, Cedars of Lebanon Bakery, and Aladco. Donna is survived by three daughters, Tina Stachura and her husband, John, and Kate Harrison, all of Adams, and Elizabeth Beltz of Londonderry, N.H.; three sisters, Irene Piekos of Cheshire, Mary Knappe of Waterbury, Conn., and Sophie Dosczecko of Russia; four grandchildren, Caitlin Therrien, Jeslyn Stachura, Wyatt and Eric Harrison; a brother-in-law, Raymond Fisher, several nieces and nephews and her beloved parakeet, Mr. Peepers. She was predeceased by a brother, Albert Grygorcewicz, and by two sisters, Lucy Fisher and Jane Jones. Lucille M. Crosier, 87, died Saturday in Geneva General Hospital.
Mrs. Crosier was a lifelong resident of the Waterloo-Fayette area. She attended the Waterloo United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Seneca County Senior Citizens and the first site manager for the Seneca County Nutrition Program for seniors. Her husband, Willard F. Crosier, died Oct.24, 1996. Surviving are a son, Donald C.; two daughters, Marlene A. Carpenter of Lancaster, Pa., and Dianne L. Weslowski of Auburn; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services are 11 a.m. Thursday in the Waterloo United Methodist Church with the Rev. George McCraken officiating. Burial is in Canoga Cemetery, Waterloo. Calling hours are 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Coe-Gen- ung Funeral Home, 46 W. Main St., Waterloo. Contributions may be made to the Waterloo United Methodist Church of the North Seneca Ambulance Corps.

CHARLEMONT - Herbert Henry Fitzroy, 85, of Charlemont, MA passed away peacefully on November 6, 2015 surrounded by his family.
Herb was born on November 2, 1930 in Ansonia, CT to Alton Parker Fitzroy, Sr. and Irene Bell Phelps. He spent his childhood years growing up in the Lee and Stockbridge, MA area. As a teenager he lived in Hawley, MA and graduated from Charlemont High School.
He started his working career as an owner/operator in the trucking business, then opened and managed the H & R Market in Charlemont before going to work for Swifts Meat Co. in Greenfield, MA as a butcher and salesman. He began his journey to working in the nuclear power industry where he spent the majority of his career by starting as a groundskeeper for New England Power Company at the Reservoir in Wilmington, VT. From there he studied and advanced himself by passing the licensing exams to become a Control Room Operator and Shift Supervisor for the Rowe Atomic Plant in Rowe, MA where he worked for 10 yrs. Herb then moved his family to West Chesterfield, NH after transferring to Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant in Vernon, VT where he worked another 10 yrs until he retired in 1981 at the age of 51. He then moved back to Charlemont.
In his retirement years he held a variety of jobs to keep active ranging from small engine repair to consultant for ENPRO, to driving school bus and finally to purchasing and operating equipment to mow roadsides for Charlemont and many neighboring towns. He retired for good in 1995 to enjoy spending time with family.
Herb enjoyed many outdoor activities throughout his lifetime - hunting, fishing, camping, snowmobiling, boating, off-roading with his Willy's Jeep and riding his BMW motorcycle. He loved dancing, especially square-dancing and attended many local dances with his family. He was an avid vegetable gardener. He donated some of his time to the Council of Aging in his latter years. He cherished spending time with family and friends.
Herb married Ruth Marion McHaffie on March 20, 1948 and they were blessed with four children. They enjoyed many happy years together until her passing in 1982. He was blessed to marry his second wife, Flora (Hall) Stetson on January 8, 1983. His family grew with the addition of his 3 stepchildren and his brother-in-law who lived with them. They spent time traveling to Florida and Tennessee and came to enjoy a few trips to Mohegan Sun.
He was pre-deceased by his Mother and Father, his first wife Ruth, his brother Alton of Charlemont, his sister Elizabeth Gray of Chadwicks, NY and his brother-in-law Guy John Hall.
Herb is survived by his second wife Flora, son Robert Fitzroy and his wife Kim of Charlemont, daughters Cinni and her husband Ivan Donovan of Hawley, MA, Dawn and her husband John Hope, Jr. of Keene, NH and Brenda and her husband Nelson Lanoue of Charlemont, MA, step-daughter Roberta and her husband Rick Rivera of New Orleans, LA, step-son Francis Stetson, Jr. and his wife Cathy and step-daughter Pamela Burke, all of Florida. He will be greatly missed by his 6 grandchildren Melanie, Jennifer, Sarah, Jeremy, Becky and Danny; his 11 step-grandchildren Laura, Alana, Sean, Kristi, Becky, Dean, Donald, Mandy, Francis, Christopher and Nicholas; as well as many beloved great grandchildren and step great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Shirley Snep of Creve Coeur, MO, Linda Lee and her husband Jeff Raymond of Plymouth, CT and his brother-in-law Leonard Hall of Dover, VT.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, November 11th from 6 to 8 p.m. at Johnson's Funeral Home in Shelburne Falls, MA. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, November 12th at 11 a.m. at Leavitt Cemetery in East Charlemont, MA.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made in Herb's memory to the Charlemont Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 139, Charlemont, MA 01339 or to a charity of your choice .
