From: "The Recorder" Greenfied, Ma. May 27, 2015 James ""Jim"" A. Rice HAWLEY - James ""Jim"" A. Rice, 93, passed away on Sunday (5-24-15) at Poet's Seat Health Care Center in Greenfield. Born on January 28, 1922 in Rowe, he was the son of Alfred and Lois (Davenport) Rice. He was a 1940 graduate of Arms Academy. Jim married the former Flora E. Walden on April 25, 1942 at St. Joseph's Church in Buckland. On October 27, 1942 Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as Second Class Machinist's Mate, receiving 5 Battle Stars. He was discharged in 1945, but called back to active duty in May, 1951. Upon completion of his second term of service, Jim became Head Lineman for Mass. Electric where he worked for 31 years. He was President of the Indianhead Snowmobile Club for many years, and enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, woodcutting and producing maple syrup. He was also a very talented woodworker, specializing in making cabinets. Survivors include his wife Flora of Hawley; son William Rice and his wife Suzanne of Glendale, AZ; two daughters: Rhoda Rice of Greenfield and Robyn Clark and her husband Timothy of Hawley; three grandchildren: Amanda Inman and her husband Luke, Justin Clark and Kayla Clark; and two great-grandchildren: Emmalee and Wyatt Inman. He also leaves a sister Agnes Spencer of CA and a brother Francis Rice of Heath. Jim was predeceased by his brother Kenneth ""Dutch"" Rice of Charlemont. Graveside services, with military honors, will be on Friday, (5-29-15) at 11:00 a.m. at North River Cemetery in Colrain, with Rev. Cara Hochhalter officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Indianhead Snowmobile Club, Rowe MA 01367. From: Greenfield Recorder, October 1, 2015 HAWLEY - Flora E. (Walden) Rice, 93, died on Saturday (9-19-2015) at Poet's Seat Health Care Center in Greenfield. Born on April 23, 1922 in Colrain, she was the daughter of Raymond and Rhoda (Streeter) Walden. She was a graduate of Arms Academy. Flora married James A. Rice at St. Joseph's in Buckland on April 25, 1942. For more than 30 years, Flora drove school bus for the Hawlemont School District. She enjoyed snowmobiling, flower gardening, cooking and canning, always taking care of family and doing things for friends. She loved owls and lighthouses. She was a member of St. Christopher's Church in Charlemont, and a member of ARC. Survivors include her son William and his wife Suzanne of Glendale, AZ; two daughters: Rhoda Rice of Greenfield and Robyn Clark and her husband Timothy of E. Hawley; three grandchildren: Amanda Inman and her husband Luke, Justin Clark and Kayla Clark; two great-grandchildren: Emmalee and Wyatt Inman and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Jim on May 24, 2015 and by her sister Charlotte Henderson and two brothers, Charles Nelson Walden and Charles Roland Walden. Graveside services for Flora will be on Monday, October 5th at 11 a.m. at the North River Cemetery in Colrain. Published in The Recorder from Jan. 29 to Jan. 30, 2014 Walter E. Gover, 94, of State Street, passed on Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, at the Buckley HealthCare Center in Greenfield, surrounded by family. Walter was born Oct. 10, 1919 in Westfield, Maine, the son of Ernest W. and R. Mary (Hunter) Gover. He attended schools in Orange, CT. Walter worked on a dairy farm in Guilford, Conn., before moving to Colrain. He worked in construction for Kendall Mills in Colrain from which he retired. After retirement, he worked part-time as landfill attendant for the Town of Colrain. Walt also enjoyed driving local schoolchildren on tours at Pine Hill Orchards during the fall apple season. Walt enjoyed his vegetable garden, giving much of the vegetables to friends, making stir-fry with his vegetables and sharing it with anyone who stopped by at lunchtime. His homemade fudge at Christmas was enjoyed by family and friends. Walt enjoyed woodworking, making many wooden toys for the grandchildren to enjoy. As a deacon of Colrain Community Church, he delivered tapes of Sunday services, visiting with those unable to attend church. Phone calls from Pat and Bob, along with visits from family and friends, always made his day special. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Annie (Ward); his four children: son, Robert of Alabama; daughter, Patricia Rockwell of Mississippi; daughter, Deborah Tetreault, and son, Donald of Florida; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandsons. Walt is also survived by his stepchildren; Helen Remillard and Mike Shulda of Greenfield, Cathy Roberts of Buckland, Mitzy Benhart of North Carolina and Rob Shulda of Kentucky; many step-grandchildren, great- grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Walter was predeceased by his sisters, Shirley Mancini, Hazel Mann, Norma Colwell, Dorothy Thomas; a brother, Herald Gover, and a step-son, Jim Shulda. The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of Buckley HealthCare for their excellent care of Walter, Hospice of Franklin County for their compassionate care during his last week and all who have been faithfully praying for Walter these past weeks. Special thanks to Dr. Robert Miller for his care of Walt. A graveside service will be held May 3, 2014 at Brick Cemetery in Colrain at a time to be announced.
