The Fitchburg Sentinel (Fitchburg, Massachusetts) Saturday February 15, 1902 THe Late Mrs. John J. Grant The Franklin, Pa. Evening News of February 8 published the following obituary notice of Mrs. John J. Grant a well known resident of this city. Mrs. Mary Augusta (Brown) Grant was a daughter of Captain Lewis and Abbey (Crosier) Brown, and was born in Deerfield, Mass. on May 16, 1845. She was reared and educated in that city, being a graduate of Deerfield Academy, where she attended school during her girlhood days. She passed her early life in that place, and in 1864 she was united in marriage to John J. Grant, at Northampton, Mass., and the union has been a most happy and pleasent one. Two children were born and survive to mourn the loss of a loving and faithful mother. They are Mrs. A. S. Cheever, wife of the assistant engineer of the Boston and Maine System of Railways, and Robert H. Grant, superintendant of the Standard Boiler-Bearing Company of Philadelphia. At the time of the death 1.30 o'clock on Wednesday February 5 the children and husband were at the bedside of the mother and wife. After living in Northampton the family, the family resided at numerous other places in the east. Mr. Grants buisness keeping him moving about the country until 1893 when the family took up thier residence in Cleveland, where they resided until they came to Franklin in November 1900. Prior to taking up thier residence in Franklin, Mrs. Grant had been in failing health, and three times her husband had taken her across the water, where the best physicians were consulted with the hope of benefittting her health. It proved useless however and on there last return from abroad Mrs. Grant was unconsious for a number of days. Since comming to Franklin she gradualy grew worse, and on February 4, Mr. Grant decided to take her to the Huron Street Hospital, in Clevland, were she could have the services of her old physician Dr. Stevens. After going to Cleveland she continued to fail, and died, February 5. Mrs. Grant was what is termed a strictly home woman. SHe spent the major portion of her time around her family fireside. She was of a most loving disposition and had many pets, showing a most beautiful trait of character. She loved company and all who called on her and spent any time in conversation became her firm friends for life. In Cleveland where she was so well known she had a host of friends who all admired her beautiful traits of character. The heartfelt sympathyof the entire community goes out to the stricken husband in his hour of trial and sorrow, and to the children, who have lost a loving mother, and to the aged parents of Mr. Grant, who are mourning a dutiful daughter. |
