In Gibson, Dec. 3rd, 1852 occurred the death of George Gelatt aged 104 years the 14th of the preceding October.
Another Revolutionary soldier gone. He had served his country in the Revolutionary War both on land and on water. Receiving the bounty of his country in a pension. He was a member of the Baptist church for nearly eighty years, having made a profession of religion (it is supposed) at twenty-two or three years old. Religion was his principle theme, especially in old age. His descendants are quite numerous in these parts, having as far as ascertained 7 children, 50 grandchildren, and 122 great-grand children, and 2 or more great-great-grand children.
His funeral was numerously attended at the meeting house of the church he belonged to, Dec., 5, where we listened to a sermon from his pastor, (Eld. J.B. Worden) from Genesis XXV, 8;: "Then Abraham gave up the ghost and died in a good old age: an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people.

Ray L. Crosier, 92, a former longtime resident of Route 67, Shaftsbury, Vt., died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington.
Born in Bennington on May 16, 1912, he was the son of William M. and Mary Louise (Flynn) Crosier. He received his education in the Bennington schools.
In 1928, he worked on the construction of the first concrete road in Southern Vermont, Route 7 between Pownal and Bennington. He enrolled in the Vaughn Barber College in Albany in 1930 and later went to work for his brother, Clarence, at his barbershop in Manchester. In 1930, they moved the shop to North Street, Bennington, where Ray Crosier worked for the next 47 years until his retirement in May 1977.
A World War II Army veteran, he served at Okinawa in the South Pacific.
He married the former Helen Colvin on May 3, 1937, at the North Bennington Baptist Church. Mrs. Crosier died May 10, 1993.
Mr. Crosier was an active member of the North Bennington Fire Department for 30 years and was presented with a life membership. He joined the Bennington Rescue Squad In 1965, where he continued to volunteer for the next 16 years until retiring in 1981.
He was one of the original members of RSVP in Bennington and also was a member of AARP. He was a longtime Red Cross volunteer at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center and was a past president of both the Bennington Rod and Gun Club and the Bennington Club and a lifetime member of American Legion Post 13 in Bennington.
A longtime member of the North Bennington Baptist Church, he served for church treasurer for 18 years. He also was former treasurer of the North Bennington Fire Department and the Good Sam Green Mountain Travelers.
A life member of the National Rifleman’s Association, he enjoyed spending time at his camps on Somerset Reservoir, Lake Hortonia and on Pownal Mountain. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cribbage in Woodford, building boats, bowling and dancing.
He leaves his companion, Nancy Allen of Bennington; two daughters, Cheryl King of Shaftsbury and Debra Rice and her husband, Steven, of Bainbridge, N.Y.; three sons and their wives, William and Elizabeth Crosier, Andrew and Theresa Crosier and Ray C. and Julie Crosier, all of Shaftsbury; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Crosier of Shaftsbury; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; a sister, Eva McLenithan of Clifton Park, N.Y.; several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and cousins.
A son, Ronald W. Crosier, and eight brothers and sisters, Walter, Andrew, Clarence, Mabel, Mildred, Belle, Florence and Julia, are deceased.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Ray L. Crosier will be held Friday, Oct. 22, 1 p.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. John Foster, chaplain of the Vermont Veterans Home, officiating. Burial will take place in Grandview Cemetery, North Bennington.
Calling hours are Thursday, 4-7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Catherine M. Haffner, 93, Prairie City, died at
10:35 p.m., Saturday, July 26, 2008, at Care Center of Abingdon.
She was born Aug. 1, 1915, in Walnut Grove, the daughter of James Franklin and Goldie M. (Crosier) Combs.
She married Floyd Haffner on Dec. 31, 1937, in Bushnell. He preceded her in death Dec. 15, 1972
She is survived by three sons, Frank (Sharon) Haffner, Abingdon, Raymond L. (Kay) Haffner, Mackinaw, and Gerald (Sharon) Haffner, Canton; one daughter, Darlene (Eugene), Haffman, White Heath; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one stepbrother, Ray Etter, Bushnell.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by one sister. She was a member of Walnut Grove Methodist Church.
Services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 31, 2008, at Walnut Grove Methodist Church with Pastor Diane Duncan officiating.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at Martin-Hollis Funeral Home, Bushnell, where friends may call after 2 p.m.
Burial will be in Point Pleasant Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Walnut Grove Methodist Church or the charity of the donor’s choice.

LANESBORO -- Earl F. Appleton Sr., 74, of 33 Grove St. died at his home Thursday.
Born in Pittsfield on Oct. 10, 1929, son of Herbert D. and Evelyn G. Herrick Appleton, he was a 1947 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
He served with the National Guard for three years and then with the Navy in the construction battalion for three years.
He was employed for 38 years at Lipton Steel in Pittsfield, retiring in 1987 as a shop supervisor.
Mr. Appleton was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, a lifetime member of the Elks Post 272 and a member of the Lanesboro Lions Club where he had been awarded the Melvin Jones Award. He was also an avid sportsman.
He leaves his wife, the former Beverly Connors, whom he married June 14, 1952.
Survivors include his two sons, Earl F. Appleton Jr. of Hinsdale and Michael Appleton of Lanesboro; a sister, Charlotte M. Cahalen of Pittsfield; seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Earl F. Appleton Sr., who died on June 10, 2004, will be Monday at 10 at the WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield with the Rev. Gwen Sears officiating. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be on Sunday from 2 to 5. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to either HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to the Lanesboro Lions Club in care of the funeral home at 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.

Lesure of 72 Chase Avenue this morning. The operation was performed by Dr. F.S. O'Hara and assisted by C.W. Wright. Mr. Crosier is 70 years old.
