The above source seems to have confused three seperate cenus records the data herein presented is from the marraige record which lists James as born 1838 in New York state. The other records list anouther James Crosier/Croshier as being born in Chicopee, Mass. and in the civil war wich does not appear to be correct for the James Croshier that married Jane Starkweather
California, Great Registers, 1866-1910," James Jones Croshier, 1894
says that a James Jones Croshier registered to vote in California, August 1894.
Records in California give a birth date 1842~1845, and a death date of 28 Oct 1917 at Los Angeles, California.
It appears that James John Croshier deserted the Union forces in 1864 and showed up in Yuba, Calfornia before 1872. He remarried about 1879 at Los Angeles, California and died.in 1917.

This was taken from the County Gazetteer Directory for 1880/1881.
The first permanent settler in Searsburg was Joseph Crosier and his two eldest sons Joseph Jr. and David, from Halifax, Windom County, who cut a wagon road from Heartwell House, at Heartwellville to the place where he located, in 1823. They cleared a piece of land (later to be called the 40 acre lot), planted corn and potatoes and sowed oats. They also built a house of spruce logs and covered it with spruce bark. They also went that summer to the beaver meadows in Woodford, where they cut and stacked a few tons of hay, and on Jan. 29, 1824, Mr. Crosier moved his family in and settled in his new house, near the south border of the town, (where Truman Canedy now lives), and lived here until his death in 1844, at the age of fifty-eight. When moving here he brought a yoke of oxen and one cow. The land was covered with dense forest, and for several years he depended upon the beaver meadows for his supply of hay. He stacked it on high ground, and in the winter when the crust was frozen hard, he and the boys with large hand sleds hauled the hay home, a distance of three or four miles through the woods.
At the town meeting, held in pursuance to a notice of warning by Samual H. Blackmer, justice of peace of Bennington, at the dwelling house of Mason Pike, in Searsburg, on the 18th of March, 1833, to organize the town and elect town officers. The following were elected: Joseph Eames, moderator and town clerk; Joseph Crosier, Hiram Weld and David Crosier, selectman; Oliver Preston, town treasurer; Luther Park, Hiram Weld and Joseph Eames, listers; John Knapp, constable; Nicholas Grousbeck, grand juror; Mason Pike, highway surveyor; Soloman Rich, pound keeper; James Crosier, Jr., Freeman Lamb and John Knapp, haywards; Joseph Crosier, Mason Pike and Oliver Preston, fence viewers; Titus Woodward, Jr., leather inspector; Freeman Lamb, sealer of weights and measures; Nicholas Grousbeck, tything man.
Joseph Crosier is buried in the Crosier Cemetery on Rt 8 in Searsburg, VT
His gravestone reads:
Joseph Crosier
Died
Dec. 16, 1844 aged
58 years, 2 months
And 21 days
But he the loved one who
No more may greet
His friend’s on earth those
Early left to mourn
May we not hope we
Again shall meet
Where hearts are never
More with sorrow born
With kindred souls forever
There.
A deathless happiness to share
