Walter Baker, 70, Readsboro Native, Dies During Fire
The body of Walter S. Baker, 70, of 21 Cypress street, Greenfield. Mass., a native of Readsboro, was discovered by firefighters yesterday as they fought a fire at the Baker camp off Greenfield road, Leyden. Baker was found by Capt. Leslie Ackerman of the Greenfield fire department. He is believed to have suffered a heart attack while fighting a fire which destroyed a cinderblock building and a small area of woodland. Two-thirds of his body had been burned. Baker was found a short distance from the burning building and was still holding a shovel with which it is believed he was trying to prevent the fire from spreading. The building was located some 100 yards off the main highway owned by the scene were unable to determine how the fire started. It is thought it started inside the building and spread to the wooded area. Baker was born on Oct. 21, 1885 in Readsboro, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Baker. He had been a resident "of Greenfield for the past 50 years. He had been a toolmaker at the Greenfield Tap and Die corporation plant for 38 years and also operated a neighborhood store. Survivors include his wife, the former Lavina Phillips; one son, Russell G. Baker; two daughters, Mrs. Mae Schotte and Mrs. Fred T. Clements, of Greenfield, and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 3.30 at the McCarthy funeral home'in Greenfield with Rev. Harold W. Curtis of the First Congregational church officiating. Cremation will follow.

Allene Theresa Ferrell, 80, of 2 Knox St. died Sunday at home.
Born in Adams on Feb. 16, 1927, daughter of Joseph T. and Blanche Zwerican Poplaski, she was educated in New York and Dalton schools.
Mrs. Ferrell was a homemaker.
She attended St. Mary's Church and enjoyed gardening, cooking and doing puzzles.
Her husband, George H. Ferrell, whom she married Nov. 26, 1947, died April 4, 1997.
She leaves a daughter, Gayle A. Gibbs of Pittsfield; two sons, James D. Ferrell of Yucaipa, Calif., and Peter A. Ferrell of Pittsfield; three brothers, Donald J. Poplaski of Pittsfield, Lawrence F. Poplaski of Lake Havasu, Ariz., and Eugene Poplaski of Greer, S.C.; three sisters, Florence E. Catelotti of Dalton, Priscilla Paterson of Oceanside, Calif., and Miriam McClune of Dalton; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A son, David J. Ferrell, and a daughter, Karen S. Ferrell, are deceased.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Allene T. Ferrell, who died Sunday, June 24, 2007, will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Pittsfield by the Rev. Paul Bombardier. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 p.m. at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, in care of the funeral home.
Mrs. Ferrell also leaves a daughter-in-law, Holly Ferrell of Yucaipa, Calif.; a son-in-law, David Gibbs of Pittsfield; nine grandchildren, Michelle Supranowicz, Eric and Jeremy Gibbs, Zachary and Kayla Ferrell-Gibbs, and Nathaniel, Joshua, Jacob and Justus Ferrell; and two great-grandchildren, Hannah Supranowicz and Gabriel Ferrell.
A brother, Joseph Poplaski, is deceased. She was always loving and supportive of her family.

A reception followed at the Rod and Gun Club 'rooms on Church Street. The bride's mother wore a navy blue suit and.tHe bridegroom's mother wore a brown, print dress. After a wedding trip to New York City the couple will make their home with the bride's parents on Notch Road. The bride, who, attended Adams High School, is employed at 'the Wyandotte Worsted mill in Piitsfleld. Mr. Knappe attended St. Joseph's High School and enlisted in the Army in 1938. Since his discharge he has been employed at the Wyandotte'''Worsted,''Pittsfleld.
